Let’s go over how to replace the ear pads/cups of the Beyerdynamic DT 770, DT 880 and DT 990 headphones.
Yes, the DT 770, DT 880 and DT 990 models share the same ear pads.
It’s not a coincidence that the DT 770, DT 880 and DT 990 models all share the same ear pads.
So for instance, if you have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 headphones and you can only get a hold of DT 770 replacement ear pads…
…then you’re in luck! You can use them.
Now let’s go over how to replace the ear pads.
How to replace the ear pads for Beyerdynamic DT 770, DT 880 and DT 990
If you have Beyerdynamic DT series, you know could’ve ordered your ear pads in velour or pleather, depending on the model and impedance. So for instance, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80 ohm headphones will only be sold with velour ear pads.
For whatever reason, you now have to replace the ear pads.
Take off the ear pads from your headphones.
You might want to be a bit gentle if you plan on keeping your old ear pads.
Why would anyone keep their old ear pads?
I could think of a few reasons:
- You want to try out pleather/velour (or something else custom fitted)
- You want to use the ear pads and trade/sell the old ones.
- You want to simply wash the ear pads.
- You are sentimental.
- You have an addiction and you’re hoarding, aren’t you?
Usually, the ear pads are just the ring-shaped material that fits around your ears.
The way they fit onto your headphones is simple: there’s rubber-like material surrounding the housing sections.
A picture is perhaps a better way to explain this:
It looks almost seamless, doesn’t it?
Anyways, it doesn’t take much power or pressure to take the rubber rings off of the headphones.
Take the replacement ear pads and…
…put them on!
It didn’t take much to take the rubber rings off, and it won’t take much to put them on. Just slide the housing inside the rubber wraps of the replacement ear pads.
You might have to play around with it for a few minutes but once you get one part of the rubber wrap onto the housing, you can get the rest on.
I’ll upload a video in the upcoming days in case you need some extra hand-holding.
Why do ear pads matter?
Before anyone buys a pair of headphones, they have to consider some things:
- Price
- Sound Quality
- Comfort
- Noise Leak/Cancellation
- Design
- Technical Specs
- Etc.
Ear pads encompass a lot of these things because ear pads directly affect the quality of sound, comfort, noise cancellation, aesthetics, and even the price.
Leather usually costs more because of the raw material and definitely provides more noise-cancellation. This means it could provide more bass as well.
It’s also easier to clean leather, but it can get very hot and uncomfortable – especially during summer.
With velour, your headphones will feel like they have extra cushions (because they do) and will be far more comfortable to rest on your head.
It will be more difficult to maintain since you will have to hand-wash velour, but it’s worth re-using them instead of buying new ones.
